What changed for Twist Bioscience Corp today
Twist Bioscience’s latest 10-Q reads like a quarterly earnings report written by a scientist who forgot to turn on the “profit” switch. For the three months to 31 March 2026, the company posted a net loss attributable to the parent of $-44.0 million and an operating loss of $-45.9 million, while burning $-42.4 million in operating cash. Diluted earnings per share were $-0.71 on 61.7 million weighted average shares outstanding, giving the company a cash-to-loss ratio that would make even the most optimistic VC reach for the stress ball.
Twist’s business is gene synthesis, next-generation sequencing services, and oligo pools sold through an eCommerce portal that promises “cloned genes in as fast as 4 bd” and “precision at any scale.” The product pages are polished enough to make a synthetic-biology graduate student bookmark the site, but the balance sheet is less impressed. Total assets stood at $676.2 million against liabilities of $221.1 million, leaving stockholders’ equity at $455.1 million and cash and short-term investments totaling $171.7 million. In other words, Twist has cash but not enough revenue to stop the bleeding.
The filings do not disclose a single customer name or signed contract that would move the needle on revenue, and the company’s own risk disclosures admit it may never generate positive cash flow from operations or profitability. Instead, Twist’s management team keeps filing Forms 144 and Forms 4 at a rate that suggests they believe the stock is worth trading regardless of the cash burn. The company’s inventory rose by $5.2 million in the quarter to $33.5 million, which looks less like demand forecasting and more like “we ordered too much and hope someone shows up.”
Twist’s eCommerce portal does score uploaded gene sequences and flags eligibility for its Express Genes service in as fast as four days, and the NGS ProLab Certified Services page promises precision and uniformity. Yet the SEC filings contain no revenue table, no customer concentration, and no guidance. If the portal is the shop window, the back office is still waiting for a shipment of revenue.
Twist’s business model hinges on selling synthesised genes, NGS services, and oligo pools to researchers, biotechs, and pharma customers who need DNA on demand. The company’s risk section openly cautions that products could become obsolete or non-competitive, that AI and machine learning may not save the day, and that the company may fail to achieve sufficient revenue to reach profitability. The filing also notes that the ability to integrate and leverage artificial intelligence remains uncertain, which is polite corporate language for “we tried and it didn’t move the needle.” The board’s caution is understandable; the shareholder base may wonder when the needle starts to move the other way.
The SEC submissions JSON confirms a steady stream of Forms 144 and Forms 4 over the past month, a reminder that insiders are still willing to trade the stock even as the company burns cash. The filings themselves do not reveal the size or direction of those trades, but the frequency is high enough to suggest that the company’s market activity is driven more by filings compliance than by revenue performance.
Twist’s product evidence is limited to official pages for Express Genes, NGS services, and oligo pools, each accompanied by marketing images and promises of speed and precision. The site does not publish customer case studies, revenue per customer, or signed contracts. The company’s own risk disclosures caution that the market for gene synthesis could shift, that competitors could emerge, and that the company may never achieve positive cash flow. In short, the marketing promises outshine the disclosed financial performance. If Twist’s product rail is the polished storefront, the financial rail is the delivery yard still waiting for customers.

Methodology
This profile is generated daily from public sources including SEC EDGAR (US-listed companies), NASDAQ Trader files, exchange listings, public macro/central-bank releases, CoinGecko crypto market files where relevant, and the TradingView global symbol catalog. Multi-model AI may assist drafting and review where configured, but sources remain the evidence rail; the chart is an Atlas static OHLC rail with a live TradingView link when verified bars are available; otherwise the page keeps the verified TradingView route as an explicit fallback.
