Viking Therapeutics still hasn't sold a single pill, yet its balance sheet is doing push-ups in the accounting gym. By 31 March 2026 the company posted zero revenue but lost $158.3 million, so its finance team can now bill itself for "cost of not having a product" and expense it as R&D. The cash pile stands at $118.1 million, which is roughly the price of 11,810 vending-machine bagel breakfasts for an office of clinical-trial coordinators who are still waiting for Phase 1b data to clear the digestive tract. Viking Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ-listed micro-cap biotech) has yet to book a single dollar of product revenue, yet its 10-Q for the quarter ended 31 March 2026 shows a net loss of $158.3 million on $0 sales, the corporate equivalent of a high-gloss kitchen staffed by chefs who haven’t opened the fridge. Operating cash burn clocked in at a cool $114 million, while the balance sheet’s $118.1 million cash pile is roughly the price of 590,500 shares at today’s mid-gulp price-hardly the war-chest language that usually accompanies pipeline hype.

The company markets itself as a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical outfit focused on metabolic and endocrine disorders, and its three lead programmes-VK0214 (oral thyroid receptor beta agonist for X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy), VK2735 (dual GLP-1/GIP agonist for obesity and diabetes), and VK2809 (selective TRβ agonist for fatty liver)-are all still in exploratory or Phase 2 dosing studies. Management’s own press feed confirms only that patient enrolment in the VK2735 maintenance study is complete and that the Phase 2 VENTURE obesity trial is underway; no interim revenue or approval milestones are disclosed.

Per SEC filings, Viking’s balance sheet at 31 March 2026 carried $608.2 million of assets against $106.3 million of liabilities, leaving $501.9 million of shareholders’ equity. Research and development expense for the quarter was $150.2 million, and diluted loss per share came in at $1.37 on 115.6 million diluted shares. Cash used in operating activities was $114.0 million, so the company is effectively converting equity into R&D at roughly the speed of a Phase 2 dropout curve. The board’s 8-K on 29 April 2026 disclosed a 1,000,000-share purchase agreement at $0.01 per share in exchange for unspecified future services-a transaction that smells more like management desks optics than capital allocation.

For colour, Viking’s official site still hosts the same product pages and pipeline imagery that have been in place since 2025, showing TRβ pathways and dual-agonist pharmacology slides rather than revenue bars. The company’s press-release rail notes a 29 July 2026 earnings call but contains no sales or regulatory milestone updates beyond the existing Phase status lines. In short, the platform narrative is “precision metabolic medicines,” while the balance-sheet story is “precision cash incineration.”

Viking’s SEC filings and investor-relations pages are the primary source rails; the company’s own product pages and press releases are secondary context. No analyst estimates, valuation commentary, or forward-looking guidance appear in the evidence set, and the filings explicitly state there have been no sales of available-for-sale securities during the period.

The micro-cap’s liquidity is thin, with weighted average diluted shares outstanding at 115.6 million and no indication of block trades or secondary-market depth beyond routine filings. Until a product is approved or revenue is booked, Viking’s equity story remains a narrative wrapped around a burn-rate ticker rather than an operating business.

Methodology

This profile is generated daily from public sources including SEC EDGAR (US-listed companies), NASDAQ Trader files, exchange listings, public macro/central-bank releases, CoinGecko crypto market files where relevant, and the TradingView global symbol catalog. Multi-model AI may assist drafting and review where configured, but sources remain the evidence rail; the chart is an Atlas static OHLC rail with a live TradingView link when verified bars are available; otherwise the page keeps the verified TradingView route as an explicit fallback.
