What changed for iShares Biotechnology ETF today
iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) is a blunt instrument masquerading as a biotech story. The fund tracks the Dow Jones U.S. Biotechnology Index, which currently lists 189 constituents-fewer companies than Spotify has playlists in your Discover Weekly. At last look, Amgen and Gilead Sciences together make up roughly 34% of the portfolio, leaving the rest of the basket to fight over crumbs while the fee clock ticks. BlackRock markets IBB as a way to “capture AI’s potential growth,” but the fund’s SEC filing explicitly states its objective is to “provide investment results that correspond generally to the price and yield performance of the Dow Jones U.S. Biotechnology Index.” Translation: it’s a fee-driven mirror, not a theme park.
What IBB actually does is simple: it buys every biotech stock in a narrow index and charges 0.43% per year to do it. The issuer’s UK product page cheerfully notes that iShares is the “largest provider of exchange-traded funds in the world,” which is impressive until you realise the fund’s liquidity is concentrated on Nasdaq, where average daily volume has been known to evaporate faster than a pint of craft lager on a Friday night. The fund’s “principal European stock exchanges” list is less a global reach and more a polite nod to places where most retail investors are more likely to hold a holiday home than shares in a biotech company.
IBB’s latest SEC N-PORT filing shows the fund held $8.7bn in net assets as of 30 June 2026, with total expenses clocking in at $37.4m over the prior 12 months. The filing also flags that “most of the protections provided by the UK regulatory system do not apply to the operation of the iShares products,” which is the fund’s way of saying: if BlackRock or its service providers mess up, UK investors are on their own. The document is refreshingly honest about systemic risk: concentration risk in the top two holdings, tracking error risk versus the benchmark, and the small-print risk that the fund’s index methodology can change without notice. It’s all there, buried in the back half of a 100-page PDF. (source: SEC EDGAR fund search for IBB, https://www.sec.gov/edgar/search/#/q=IBB)
If you want to see where IBB trades, head to Nasdaq’s ETF screener, where the fund’s ticker appears alongside daily volume and intraday indicative value quotes. The fund’s expense ratio of 0.43% sits above the category median for U.S. biotech ETFs, according to FINRA’s Fund Analyzer, which is another way of saying the wrapper is thicker than the issuer’s marketing deck. The fund’s tracking difference versus its benchmark has widened in recent months, partly because the index itself is top-heavy and partly because the fund’s cash drag from creations/redemptions can’t keep up with the index’s volatility. What changed this week: the Dow Jones U.S. Biotechnology Index rebalanced on 18 July 2026, shuffling a handful of constituents in and out. The net effect was marginal-Amgen and Gilead still dominate-but the index provider’s methodology notes that “the biotech sector remains highly sensitive to FDA decisions and macro liquidity conditions,” which is fund-speak for “expect more drama than diversification.” The issuer’s AI ETFs marketing campaign continues to conflate biotech with artificial intelligence, despite the fact that IBB’s holdings are overwhelmingly classic drug developers rather than AI software firms. What remains unproven: whether IBB’s narrow basket can deliver long-term biotech exposure without the issuer’s fee turning compounding into erosion. The fund’s marketing promises “expert management and industry-leading research,” but the only expertise on display is the issuer’s ability to extract basis points at scale. If you want genuine exposure to biotech innovation, you’ll need to dig deeper than the top two holdings and accept that the wrapper is the main event, not the science inside. Methodology
This profile is generated daily from public sources including SEC EDGAR (US-listed companies), NASDAQ Trader files, exchange listings, public macro/central-bank releases, CoinGecko crypto market files where relevant, and the TradingView global symbol catalog. Multi-model AI may assist drafting and review where configured, but sources remain the evidence rail; the chart is an Atlas static OHLC rail with a live TradingView link when verified bars are available; otherwise the page keeps the verified TradingView route as an explicit fallback.
