What changed for First Trust Nasdaq Semiconductor ETF today
The First Trust Nasdaq Semiconductor ETF (FTXL) is a wrapper that sells a theme-exposure to the largest U.S.-listed semiconductor companies-while quietly charging 0.60% per year for the privilege. The fund tracks the Nasdaq US Smart Semiconductor Index, a rules-based basket that caps individual weights at 8% and rebalances twice annually. The Nasdaq listing page shows daily volume above 100,000 shares, indicating liquidity for retail investors who want to board or exit without wrestling a broker for a seat.
The mandate promises “exposure to companies engaged in the design, distribution, manufacture, or sale of semiconductors,” which sounds thrilling until you realise the actual holdings are the usual suspects: NVIDIA, TSMC, ASML, AMD, Broadcom, and others whose logos you’ll recognise from every chip conference keynote. The issuer’s marketing leans hard on AI and data-centre demand, but the index methodology is agnostic-it simply ranks U.S.-listed semiconductor companies by market cap and applies the 8% cap, then reweights the survivors. The fund’s AUM has crept past $2bn, which is impressive for a wrapper that does little more than own a slice of the global semiconductor supply chain and charge a fixed toll.
FTXL’s expense ratio is disclosed in the prospectus as 0.60%, deducted quarterly, and confirmed by FINRA’s Fund Analyzer. The issuer describes this as “competitive,” which is technically true when stacked against thematic ETFs charging 1% or more, but still amounts to millions in fee revenue for First Trust. The SEC’s EDGAR filing lists the fund’s creation date, custodian, and index provider, but it doesn’t promise the semiconductor cycle will cooperate-only that the fund will charge 0.60% to track the index, come boom or bust.
The fund’s tracking method is full replication, meaning it holds every constituent of the Nasdaq US Smart Semiconductor Index, even the laggards. Rebalancing happens in May and November, so any stock that falls out of the top 30 or breaches the 8% cap gets swapped out on a fixed schedule. The Nasdaq listing page provides the daily price, volume, and holdings, but it doesn’t show whether the index’s methodology is forward-looking or merely backward-looking-it just follows the published rules.
The chart context is available on Nasdaq’s FTXL page, but the renderer will place the proper visual rail; this report does not invent price levels or draw technical lines. The fund’s price history is a reflection of the underlying index, which in turn reflects the fortunes of the global semiconductor industry. What the chart cannot show is whether the 0.60% fee is “worth it”-that depends on whether the investor believes the index’s selection and weighting will relative strength the broader market over the fund’s holding period.

Methodology
This profile is generated daily from public sources including SEC EDGAR (US-listed companies), NASDAQ Trader files, exchange listings, public macro/central-bank releases, CoinGecko crypto market files where relevant, and the TradingView global symbol catalog. Multi-model AI may assist drafting and review where configured, but sources remain the evidence rail; the chart is an Atlas static OHLC rail with a live TradingView link when verified bars are available; otherwise the page keeps the verified TradingView route as an explicit fallback.
