What changed for Bitwise Ethereum ETF today
Ether’s journey from decentralised protocol to exchange-traded product reached a milestone on 23 July 2024, when the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved multiple spot Ether exchange-traded products, including ETHW. The approval followed the SEC’s January 2024 green light for spot Bitcoin ETFs, signalling a formal embrace of crypto-native assets by traditional market plumbing. Yet the filing that underpins ETHW still devotes a paragraph to DeFi’s promise of disintermediated finance, as if the fund’s real work were anything more than custody, price tracking, and fee collection. The SEC’s decision turned a blockchain experiment into a listed ticker, but the wrapper’s mandate did not change: hold ether, charge 0.95%, and publish a holdings list that is, at heart, a single-asset exposure in an ETF skin.
ETHW is an exchange-traded fund designed to track the price of ether, the native asset of the Ethereum network. The issuer’s 10-K for the year ended 31 December 2025 explains that Ethereum supports DeFi platforms for borrowing, lending, custody, trading, derivatives and insurance, but the fund itself does none of those things. It is a passively managed wrapper that holds ether via a custodian and aims to track the Bloomberg Ethereum Total Return Index, a benchmark constructed from ether’s spot price and staking rewards. The fund’s literature frames the product as a gateway to decentralised finance, yet the only decentralisation on display is the distribution of a 0.95% expense ratio to the issuer and its ecosystem. The SEC filing does not promise DeFi services; it promises a fee.
The fund’s 10-K states that the Ethereum network has been used for DeFi platforms seeking to democratise financial services by removing intermediaries. The filing also notes that in July 2024 the SEC approved multiple spot Ether exchange-traded products, including ETHW, following the January 2024 approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs. The CME launched ether futures in February 2021 on a CFTC-registered designated contract market, giving traditional investors a regulated venue to express ether exposure without holding the asset. ETHW, by contrast, offers the same exposure through a listed fund that charges 0.95% per year to hold the underlying asset and publish a holdings list. The filing’s most concrete figure is the expense ratio; the rest is narrative.
Nasdaq lists ETHW, providing a market for secondary trading, liquidity quotes, and intraday price discovery. The fund’s holdings are published daily, and the price tracks the Bloomberg Ethereum Total Return Index, which combines ether’s spot price with staking rewards. FINRA’s Fund Analyzer confirms the expense ratio at 0.95%, while the SEC’s EDGAR filing outlines the fund’s mandate, investment strategy, and risk factors. There are no surprises: the fund holds ether, charges a fee, and relies on Nasdaq for liquidity. The story is the fee, not the DeFi promise.
What changed this week: the fund continues to trade on Nasdaq under ticker ETHW with its 0.95% expense ratio unchanged since launch. The holdings list is updated daily and shows a single-asset exposure to ether. No earnings, dividends, or capital returns are disclosed because the fund does not generate them; it simply holds an asset and charges a fee. The wrapper’s job is to track, not to innovate. The source rail does not parse AUM, trading volume, or bid-ask spreads, so those figures remain unproven in this file. The next material evidence would be an updated 10-K with AUM growth, a fund fact sheet with holdings concentration, or a FINRA update with total expense ratio changes. Until then, the wrapper’s story is the fee and the ledger.

Methodology
This profile is generated daily from public sources including SEC EDGAR (US-listed companies), NASDAQ Trader files, exchange listings, public macro/central-bank releases, CoinGecko crypto market files where relevant, and the TradingView global symbol catalog. Multi-model AI may assist drafting and review where configured, but sources remain the evidence rail; the chart is an Atlas static OHLC rail with a live TradingView link when verified bars are available; otherwise the page keeps the verified TradingView route as an explicit fallback.
