What changed for iShares ESG Aware MSCI USA Small-Cap ETF today
The iShares ESG Aware MSCI USA Small-Cap ETF (ESML) is supposed to embody the future, but its current holdings feel more like the past wearing a sustainability badge. The fund, which listed on Nasdaq, exists to track the MSCI USA Small Cap ETF Index after the latter has applied a gentle ESG filter to roughly 1,800 US small-cap companies with market caps above $200 million. The index then weights the survivors by market value, with a single-stock cap of 0.50%, ensuring no single green-washing champion can tilt the basket. BlackRock charges 0.15% per year for the honour-about the price of three months of Spotify Premium.
The top three holdings are industrial logistics businesses: Lamb Weston (frozen potato products), FTAI Aviation (aircraft leasing), and Air Lease (aircraft leasing again). None of these companies sound like they’ve ever attended an ESG conference outside the management desks, yet they sit at the top of a fund marketed as “aligned with the future.” The index rebuilds quarterly with a 35-day lag, so investors are always one quarter behind the latest spreadsheet.
The fund’s SEC EDGAR filing confirms the basket is reconstructed each quarter, while BlackRock’s own UK marketing admits most UK investor protections do not cover iShares ETFs and that compensation under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme is not available in the event of issuer default. The FINRA Fund Analyzer shows the 0.15% expense ratio is deducted daily, quietly eroding performance over time. Nasdaq data shows average daily volume around 125,000 shares-roughly the number of people who still believe ESG is anything more than a box-ticking exercise.
The ESG filter itself starts with every US small-cap stock over $200 million, applies MSCI’s ESG ratings, and then cuts the list down to the top 50% by free-float-adjusted market cap, subject to the 0.50% cap. The resulting basket is then weighted by market value. The index’s methodology is available on MSCI’s site, but the fund’s prospectus warns that the ESG screen is “not intended to reflect an investment objective based on ESG characteristics” and that “the index may include securities of issuers that are not necessarily leaders in ESG practices.” Translation: the filter is light enough that even a mildly responsible fund could pass muster.
Trading ESML means buying a wrapper that promises thematic purity at the cost of a plain index, a 35-day lag, and a daily 0.15% haircut. The Nasdaq route is straightforward, but the volume profile suggests this is a fund for the patient rather than the punchy. If you want the small-cap exposure and can live without the ESG gloss, the plain-vanilla version is cheaper; if you want the gloss, you’re buying a spreadsheet with a fee. The tension sits between the marketing and the mechanism-and the mechanism wins every time.

Methodology
This profile is generated daily from public sources including SEC EDGAR (US-listed companies), NASDAQ Trader files, exchange listings, public macro/central-bank releases, CoinGecko crypto market files where relevant, and the TradingView global symbol catalog. Multi-model AI may assist drafting and review where configured, but sources remain the evidence rail; the chart is an Atlas static OHLC rail with a live TradingView link when verified bars are available; otherwise the page keeps the verified TradingView route as an explicit fallback.
