The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (EEM) closed flat at $42.50 on thin volume, a performance as uninspiring as its 0.37% fee structure. While BlackRock’s marketing material promises 'strategic access to global growth engines,' the fund’s actual holdings read like a who’s who of state-backed giants and tech oligarchs. Over 45% of assets are concentrated in Chinese equities, with Tencent and ADRs of Saudi Aramco dominating the top 10 holdings-a 'diverse' portfolio only if one considers autocratic regimes and oil sands as eclectic.

According to the SEC’s latest filing, EEM’s total assets under management (AUM) have shrunk to $24.8 billion, a 12% decline since 2023 that suggests investors are losing patience with the fund’s lack of agility. The ETF’s tracking difference-a measure of how closely it follows the MSCI Emerging Markets Index-stood at 0.42% over the past year, a gap wide enough to question whether the 'low-cost' promise holds water. Meanwhile, the fund’s prospectus continues to tout its 'passive management' approach, which seems to mean 'we don’t bother trying to beat the benchmark, but we’ll charge you anyway.'

FINRA’s Fund Analyzer reveals EEM’s 30-day average spread of $0.03, a liquidity metric that sounds better than it is when you realize the ETF’s average daily volume has dropped 18% year-over-year. The fund’s official UK distributor also notes that EEM is 'not eligible for protection under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme,' a fact that probably won’t comfort investors if another emerging market crisis erupts. For all its glossy brochures, EEM remains what it’s always been: a tollbooth on the road to growth, collecting fees while offering little in the way of actual navigation.
