What changed for Emergent BioSolutions Inc. today
Emergent BioSolutions’ latest contract modification for ACAM2000, the smallpox and mpox vaccine, adds $52.7 million to its existing ten-year agreement with the U.S. government’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA). The adjustment, announced on 29 June 2026, is incremental work under contract 75A50119C00071 rather than new business, yet it keeps the product line on life support a decade after the original panic-buy orders dried up. The press release arrives just as the company’s quarterly filing shows revenue of $156.1 million for the three months ending 31 March 2026, down from the same period a year earlier and barely above the level that keeps the lights on.
Emergent positions itself as a diversified biodefence and medical countermeasures player, with a portfolio that includes the smallpox vaccines ACAM2000 and TEMBEXA, the anthrax treatments ANTHRASIL and BioThrax, the vaccinia immune globulin CNJ-016, and the opioid-overdose rescue sprays NARCAN and KLOXXADO. The earnings deck for Q1 2026 highlights confirmed Canadian orders of $35 million for 2026 and a U.S. government contract award of $54 million for CNJ-016, alongside up to $21.5 million for BioThrax deliveries to the Department of Defence. Yet the same deck shows net income of only $6.8 million on revenues of $156.1 million, with operating income of $10.5 million, while cash used in operations clocked in at a negative $33.8 million. The contrast between the product slide deck and the cash-flow line is hard to square.
The company’s 10-Q for the quarter ending 31 March 2026 reports total assets of $1.32 billion, liabilities of $797.3 million, and stockholders’ equity of $523.1 million. Cash and equivalents stood at $160.3 million, down from $227 million at year-end 2025, while inventory fell by $15.8 million to $327.6 million. Research and development expense was $10.5 million, up from $8.4 million in the prior-year quarter, and capital expenditure was a modest $2.4 million. Diluted earnings per share came in at $0.07 on 56.5 million weighted-average shares outstanding, a figure that has barely budged since the company last raised equity in 2021. The balance-sheet optics are those of a firm whose primary revenue driver remains government orders rather than commercial momentum.
If you want a chart, the daily story is already inside the filings: Emergent’s share-price range over the past twelve months has been set by the cadence of contract announcements and the pace of inventory writedowns, not by any organic product cycle. The company’s 10-K for 2025 shows total revenues of $742.9 million, so the first-quarter 2026 run-rate implies a run-down in annual sales unless the backlog converts at a rate Emergent has not managed in the last two years. The mechanism is simple: government contracts are lumpy, inventory is perishable in its accounting value, and the bank’s Dilution Reserve gives lenders the whip hand on any deterioration in shelf-life assumptions. There is no visible path to sustained free cash flow until the portfolio diversifies beyond the single-customer, single-indication model that still dominates the revenue line.
What changed this week is the ACAM2000 contract amendment, a $52.7 million add-on that keeps the product in the procurement pipeline but does nothing to alter the underlying revenue cadence. The company’s April 2026 earnings slide deck trumpets $35 million in confirmed Canadian orders and a $54 million award for CNJ-016, yet the same deck shows that cost of product and services sales fell by $16.5 million compared with Q1 2025, a decline that flatters gross margins without signalling volume growth. The evidence does not yet prove that Emergent can grow outside the U.S. government’s biodefence budget or that its inventory is actually moving off the shelf rather than being re-priced. The next meaningful catalyst would be a commercial-scale order for NARCAN or KLOXXADO that is not tied to a state tender, or a sustained increase in R&D spend that translates into late-stage product approvals rather than early-stage write-offs.

Methodology
This profile is generated daily from public sources including SEC EDGAR (US-listed companies), NASDAQ Trader files, exchange listings, public macro/central-bank releases, CoinGecko crypto market files where relevant, and the TradingView global symbol catalog. Multi-model AI may assist drafting and review where configured, but sources remain the evidence rail; the chart is an Atlas static OHLC rail with a live TradingView link when verified bars are available; otherwise the page keeps the verified TradingView route as an explicit fallback.
