Butterfly Network’s handheld ultrasound iQ3, the device that won a 2024 Prix Galien award for “best medical technology,” is built on the company’s proprietary P4.3 Ultrasound-on-Chip™ platform, a neat trick that neatly avoids the tiny detail that the company’s operating cash flow is itself running on fumes: minus $13.9 million for the quarter ended 31 March 2026. The award-winning probe is the centrepiece of a platform story that promises portable, semiconductor-based imaging, cloud software and AI, but the 10-Q filed on 24 July 2026 shows $26.5 million of revenue against a $12.7 million net loss and 256.5 million diluted shares in the same quarter.

The company’s “Ultrasound-on-Chip™” marketing promises whole-body handheld probes that run at 1-12 MHz frequencies, and its “Garden” developer programme lets third parties build clinical applications on the platform. The product pages and press releases are polished and professional, but the operating reality is thinner: inventory of $59.3 million sits on the balance sheet while cash from operations drained $13.9 million in Q1 2026. The iQ+ Bladder™ system is a portable bladder scanner available for individual purchase, yet the broader ultrasound market remains a single-product story for Butterfly, with one revenue line, one device line, and one big bet on semiconductor imaging.

The 10-Q for the quarter ended 31 March 2026 shows total assets of $285.9 million, liabilities of $94.7 million, and stockholders’ equity of $191.2 million. Cash and cash equivalents stand at $138 million, giving the company roughly 14 months of runway at Q1 2026 cash-burn rates if no new financing arrives. Research and development expense was $9.5 million in the quarter, while capital expenditure on property, plant and equipment was a mere $950,000. Diluted earnings per share were negative $0.05 on 256.5 million diluted shares, and the company reported a net loss attributable to parent of $12.7 million. Inventory fell by $2.1 million during the quarter, suggesting some price or volume re-pricing rather than a sales boom.

Butterfly’s SEC filings also show a flurry of Rule 144 sales by insiders on 21-22 July 2026, timed just ahead of the next quarterly grind. The contrast between the award-winning marketing copy and the prosaic footnotes-“net cash used in operating activities: $13.9 million”-is so glaring that the iQ3 almost seems to chirp “disclaimer: results may vary” in its own ultrasound tones. The company’s Embedded™ licensing business is designed to license Ultrasound-on-Chip™ technology into non-competitive markets, but the core device division is still the story.

The company’s press pages tout expansion into Brazil, FDA clearance for a blind-sweep ultrasound AI tool for women’s health, and brain images unveiled by partner Aleph Neuro, yet none of these developments have yet shown up in the revenue line. The iQ3’s semiconductor platform leverages Moore’s Law improvements released in 2020 (iQ+) and 2024 (iQ3), but the financial filings show the company is still burning cash at a clip that outstrips modest inventory reductions and tiny capex.

Methodology

This profile is generated daily from public sources including SEC EDGAR (US-listed companies), NASDAQ Trader files, exchange listings, public macro/central-bank releases, CoinGecko crypto market files where relevant, and the TradingView global symbol catalog. Multi-model AI may assist drafting and review where configured, but sources remain the evidence rail; the chart is an Atlas static OHLC rail with a live TradingView link when verified bars are available; otherwise the page keeps the verified TradingView route as an explicit fallback.
